About the Location
In the heart of Ulvenhout, you’ll find De Pekhoeve Farm, a remarkable national historic monument first mentioned in 1590. This impressive heritage complex consists of a 16th-century farmhouse with a stable and hayloft, an iconic Flemish barn (now the Social and Cultural Center), a bakehouse, and the carriage house (the Karkooi or Karschob). The farm began as a classic long-fronted farmhouse until the barn was built perpendicular to the residential section in 1850.
Over the centuries, the complex has served countless functions and housed many residents. After the historic building stood vacant, the residents of Ulvenhout were invited in 2011 to help shape its future. Their wish was clear: it should become a social and cultural gathering place that connects the village. Today, this historic site is once again bustling with activity, featuring a daycare center, charming meeting rooms, and a beloved gathering place.
The Karkooi, dating from the early 18th century, was formerly used to store agricultural implements such as plows and carts. The left section housed young cattle and later horses, while the right section—‘t Gerij—held the farmer’s carriage for Sunday church services. Today, this section is home to a vibrant book-swap project. Every day, passersby, cyclists, and villagers stop here to swap a book or have a chat.

In the charming Karkooi, you’ll find a unique book exchange project. This is the place in Ulvenhout where villagers, cyclists, and passersby meet every day for a chat or a good book. Step into the Karkooi Living Room and get a fun explanation of exactly how the Ruilboek works in about 10 minutes (maximum of 8 people at a time). Feel free to take a look around or pick up a great book right away!
