About the Location
The Nuwenhuys Estate is located in Breda’s picturesque Markdal; a historic site where people have lived and worked for over a thousand years. Even before the year 1000, the area surrounding the farmstead was one of the settled centers of what would later become the Groot-Daasdonk estate. The name “Nuwenhuys” was first mentioned in 1425 and, in 1516, referred to a “stone house with a barn, stables, bakehouse, vegetable garden, and orchard.” Since 2017, the estate has once again proudly borne this oldest known name.
Today, the estate is home to a beautifully restored, nationally designated historic long-fronted farmhouse and a Flemish barn rebuilt in 2021. The authentic bakehouse, the vegetable garden, and the orchard have also been restored to their former glory and are definitely worth a visit.
In addition to its rich history, Nuwenhuys is all about bringing people together. The estate is a warm, safe place where people with and without disabilities come together, work, and can be themselves. Day programs for people with disabilities go hand in hand here with unique meeting facilities and an accessible vacation retreat.

Baking pizza in the bakehouse
In the restored bakehouse, you can bake your dream pizza under the guidance of Nuwenhuys volunteers. This is a fun activity for both adults and children.

During the special bakehouse tour, you’ll learn more about the construction, restoration, and operation of the bakehouse.
Contribute to Resilience
The theme Resilient Heritage highlights how important it is to keep our heritage resilient. You, too, can contribute to this. The Open Monument Days Breda program is free to attend, but you can support this location with a voluntary donation via this website.
Practical Information
Parking at the Nuwenhuys Estate is very limited. We therefore recommend coming by bike or on foot through the beautiful Markdal.
