We are all on the move through life. The pivotal moments – birth, marriage, death – have been celebrated in the church for centuries. For more than 135 years it has been done at this spot; before that it was done in the cemetery opposite, where the medieval Brigida Church stood.
The present St. Mary’s Assumption Church was built in 1886-1887 to replace that old church in the Brigida Cemetery. It is a neo-Gothic cross church, with a tower equipped with a spire and a mechanical tower clock from 1888. The church was designed by Jan Jurien van Langelaar of Princenhage.

The interior still features elements that once already had a place in the old Brigida church. Also, several artifacts in the church refer to its donors – people who now rest in the old cemetery.
Dive into history
Volunteers will be on hand to explain about the church and its relationship to the Brigida Cemetery opposite.
