For 150 years, the Reformed Congregation in Princenhage worshipped in the Roman Catholic Martinus Church. This was assigned to them after the Peace of Westphalia in 1648, forcing the Catholics to move to a barn church. In 1798 the Catholics got the Martinus Church back, but only after paying compensation to the Reformed. With the received amount (fl. 453,-) the Reformed Congregation rented the building at Dreef 7, where they held church services in the anteroom for twenty years.
In 1819, with the support of King William I, a new church building in waterfront style could be built on Dreef 5. The front facade is characterized by Ionic half columns, cornices and a classical pediment. In 1967, the church was named St. John’s Church.
