As soon as you drive up the impressive avenue at Park Zuiderhout, you immediately sense that you have arrived at a special place with a rich history. The more than 100-year-old Mission House – once a major seminary – stands here as a majestic witness to the past. Now it is a caring community where the elderly celebrate life.
Last year, some stucco crumbled in the chapel. Underneath it was discovered an old mural of a dove that had been surprisingly well preserved. The dove, which already has special significance within religious life, has thus regained its place.
“Follow the flight of the dove” – A symbolic journey through the mission house
Introduction – The Story of the Dove
The dove has been a powerful symbol for centuries. It represents peace, hope and – within religious traditions – also the Holy Spirit. In and around the mission house you will encounter the dove in various places.
Upon arrival, visitors receive a folded paper dove. At the end of the route they can hang it – if they wish – in the chapel. Here they can also add a personal wish or message to the dove. Thus together we symbolically give shape to peace, hope and connectedness – in the present and with an eye to the future.
Activity
Between 2 and 5 p.m., visitors are welcome to make their own pigeon to take home. Together with residents, they can participate in the walk-in workshop.
During the workshop, we use a variety of creative techniques – think folding, painting and mosaics. Everyone can shape a unique dove in their own way. Young and old, experienced or beginner: everyone is welcome to participate and make a personal contribution to this symbolic flight of hope and peace.
