Do you know where the clapper hangs? Climb the Breda tower and see how that bell is rung manually!
In the tower of the Grote Kerk hangs the 3750 kg Breda-Nassau bell. This year the bell is exactly 330 years old and still functions today as a swinging, hourly and carillon bell.
The bell used to be rung at the opening and closing of the city gates, for prayer, at alarm or in case of fire. Still today, the Bellringers Guild Breda manually rings the bell on special occasions. During Open Monuments days 2025, it is possible to climb the tower and attend a demonstration of bell ringing. Members of the Bellringers Guild Breda will gladly guide everyone around the tower. They will give explanations about the tower, the Breda-Nassau bell and the drum room. Of course everyone can also enjoy the beautiful view.

There are 120 free tickets for this special visit with reception by the Breda Bellringers’ Guild.
From 10:30 a.m. these are available free of charge and can be picked up from a bell-ringer at the bottom of the tower (Torenstraat entrance). Due to the high demand for tickets, a maximum of four tickets per person has been set. Op = op!

3:00 pm
4:00 p.m.
The tours will be given in Dutch but of course the guides will be happy to answer your English questions as well.
Please note:
Due to safety concerns, tower climbs are only open to persons 12 years and older + physically in good condition.
If you are afraid of heights or have difficulty walking. Then you probably don’t want to go here either….
