After the historic façade of Hotel Nassau Breda, a world where history and elegance converge unfolds. Where the influential Bruheze family once held court, three noble town houses arose, closely linked to nearby Breda Castle.
The hotel complex is located on Nieuwstraat, one of the city’s oldest streets, already visible on maps from 1350 as “De Nieuwe Strate.” Behind this street was the first city wall of Breda, completed in 1410. Between these core locations a special ensemble of national monuments arose that now comes together in Hotel Nassau Breda.
In 1805, Huis Assendelft was purchased by the Parish of Saint Anthony. A year later, in 1806, a Roman Catholic orphanage opened here. The Order of Franciscans settled in the property in 1849 and christened it “The Charity Institution. New construction followed in 1903 on the site of a former soap factory: the sisters erected a neo-Gothic chapel and a brick extension. Their religious domain expanded with the purchase of Huis Bruheze in 1934 and Huis Waelwijk in 1950, giving the complex its current basic form.
After years of neglect, this religious heritage has been revived. Today, Hotel Nassau Breda brings the layered past together in a stylish, monumental whole. Where once there was sober living, the hotel now offers a luxurious experience full of character, without forgetting its rich past.
Take a leap into history – from noble court houses to the Liefdegesticht – and end in the elegance of the present.
